Why Employees Leave & What to Do About It?

More than ever, there is a huge demand for labour in almost all sectors of the economy. Qualified and committed employees are rare and not easy to find. And when a company has found one of these perfectly suited and motivated employees, its priority should be to keep them. Nevertheless, it still happens that employees quit their jobs.

How can this happen and what can employers do to avoid it?

Here are 8 reasons and tips to make your employees want to stay with you and be more productive than ever.

Dissatisfaction with the management of a company.

Employees that are highly engaged, motivated and experts at what they do are hard to find. They do work extra hours or provide extra performances. But not if all these extras are not recognised and appreciated. There is nothing more unmotivating than a management that is not even able to say “Thank you!” for all the hard and important work its employees do.

The corporate culture does not match the values of an employee.

It is important to design the corporate culture in such a way that is attractive to employees or potential applicants that lets them feel comfortable and motivated in the company. It must be defined how decisions are to be made and how to interact with each other. Of course, not everyone can identify with the culture of a company, no matter how great and employee-friendly it may be. Some employees just do not feel like they belong but find out later. To avoid these situations, be transparent from the start. Tell them what your company stands for and what your values are. Also, communicate these openly with your employees.

The management puts too much pressure on its (good) employees over a long period of time.

A management feels safer if it leaves the important and biggest tasks to its best and most reliable employees. If these tasks can be done during the working hours and the effort the employee puts in is paid accordingly, it is not a problem. For some, it is even a form of recognition. However, it can also be perceived as a punishment because more work has to be done that takes more time due to its importance. Permanent overload and pressure lead to loss of productivity and demotivation. Stress can affect health and satisfaction, which can affect the overall work of your employees.

Have you ever heard of a Bore out?

It happens to your employees when they are bored and underchallenged at work. Employers need to challenge their employees. Give them tasks, feedback, and trust them to do what they do best. Especially, talented and committed employees want to be challenged to develop personally and professionally. Therefore, you need to provide them with opportunities. Otherwise, you will lose them.

The management does not listen to their employees´ ideas that could bring the company forward innovatively.

In the long run, this leads to frustration, dissatisfaction, and lower motivation. Companies need to remember that they are nothing without their employees. They are a team with the same goal. But to achieve this goal, a company must constantly develop and optimise its strategy and concept. With the ideas and feedback of the employees, the management can take a different look at things that need to be improved. Listen to them!

They do not have a good relationship with other colleagues.

A balanced working atmosphere is important for an employee’s productivity and motivation. If this is not the case, employees are less satisfied and tend to leave the company. Employers need to support collegial cooperation in their company with Workshops or After-Work-Events. Find your team spirit!

What is the meaning of the work I do?

Every worker wants to feel that they are important and can contribute something to the success of a company. Whenever workers are not clear about the meaning and importance of their work, employers need to give them perspectives and explain why their work is so important to the success of the company.

Employees are not independent.

Anything they want to do, they must first tell their management. Even the smallest decisions must be presented to the manager first. Trust your workers in what they are doing or if they ask for more flexible working hours. If mistakes are made, do not blame your staff. See mistakes as opportunities and talk to them to improve them so they won´t happen again.
